About me.

My name is Sara Macapagal (Stanworth-Cunnane for those who knew me before I was married). I’m an artist based in Toronto, Canada.

Although I’ve been making art since I was child and later took a BFA at York in Visual Art, the work I do now really only started in 2020. During the first year of the pandemic, I started making cards for friends and family who I couldn’t see in person. I had some beautiful magazines that my sister sent me, with pastel colour palettes and lovely matte paper that have become my preference.

My work has always been intuitive and unplanned, usually dictated by the relationship between shapes, textures and colours. A theme will emerge, and I like to use words, phrases or dictionary definitions to prompt a connection between the shapes and images on the page.

The images are ultimately up for interpretation, and I like to invite the viewer to find their own meaning in them. For me, it’s a link between the unexpressed in me, and the unexpressed in you: it’s an attempt to create connection, to speak from within myself, from a place that has no words or language.
